Alabama Highlighted Cities and Regions

Gulf Coast

A timber frame house featuring expansive windows, soaring ceilings, covered porches and energy efficiency is an ideal choice for building near the coast. White sand beaches with turquoise waters are at your doorstep in this area of Alabama. Charter a fishing boat, take the family bird watching on Dauphin Island. Stroll through the moss-draped live oaks in the parks. Enjoy fresh seafood and the sunset in a pier restaurant and call this beautiful area home.

Birmingham

The largest city in Alabama, Birmingham is a medical and financial center, bustling with heritage and culture. Beautiful golf courses and the nearby University of Alabama, home of the Crimson Tide, offer plenty of entertainment for the sports fans. History buffs will appreciate the national landmark site featuring prehistoric platform mounds, the Civil Rights Institute and other museums. Cool off in the summer in Lake Lurleen and then head home to cook out in your outdoor timber frame kitchen or pick up some slow cooked barbeque to enjoy on the porch.

The Cahaba & Oakmulgee

A short drive south of Birmingham, this area is an outdoor lover’s paradise. The Cahaba River is the longest free-flowing river in Alabama and is one of the country’s most biologically diverse. A 700-acre park offers trails in the hardwood forest, swamp lakes, and a beach preserve and is ideal for canoeing, fishing and bird watching. The Oakmulgee District of the Talladega National Forest offers plenty of outdoor recreation as well. Pick up some peaches and pecans to snack on while you’re enjoying the scenery. And when you’re ready for a different kind of entertainment, Talladega is only an hour or so away. A timber frame home in this region puts you near a variety of things to enjoy outside.

The Shoals

In northwestern Alabama, known as The Shoals, you will find rich history, music and plenty of outdoor recreation. Visit Helen Keller’s home in Tuscumbia and an iconic Frank Lloyd Wright home, the only one open to the public in the southeast. Check out the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, the museum memorializing the legendary blues musician W.C. Handy, and sound studios in Muscle Shoals. Golfing, lakes and waterfalls beckon you outdoors. Alabama timber frames with wide open covered porches would be ideal in this area.

In northwest Alabama, near Jasper, we built a lakeside timber frame home. The hand-cut frame is Douglas Fir, a favorite wood for timber framers due to its strength and minimal shrinkage.

The final project included two sets of timber framed stairs, a large semi-octagonal back porch, a gazebo and a MoreSun first - a timber framed elevator shaft.
